All these cracks, scars and silences need to be addressed for anything to heal. Art is no cure on its own for sure, but at least it can bring us a few steps closer to it.

Four shortlisted artists out of 70 candidates are exhibited at Berlin’s Hamburger Bahnhof. This 10th edition of the annual prize sheds light on young international artists living in Germany, in keeping with the cosmopolitan and avant-garde spirit of Berlin’s contemporary art scene. The practice of these artists is equally eclectic. Katja Novitskova whose work transforms images found on the Web to raise questions around ecology. For Pattern of Activation (Mutants), for example, Katia took photographs of the sea worm ‘C.Elegans’ – this mutant creature found along the Belgian coast, a symptom of global warming. She disproportionately enlarged their image, transforming them into grotesque and disturbing totems. Suspense until the announcement of the final winner who will be offered a solo show at the National Gallery the following year, accompanied by a catalog.

For the past 8 years, the prize for film in art has been supported by both the National Gallery and the Film Academy. This scholarship is aimed at young filmmakers who find experimental ways to merge film and visual arts. The exhibition is supported by BMW and the Friends of the Nationalgalerie. Among the lucky recipients of this award in the last few years are Agnieszka Polska (2017), Anne Imhof (2015), Mariana Castillo Deball (2013), and Cyprien Gaillard (2011).

Mais encore? quatre artistes présélectionnés parmi 70 candidats sont exposés au Hamburger Bahnhof. Cette 10e edition du prix décerné tous les ans jette la lumière sur ces jeunes créatifs internationaux vivant en Allemagne, à l’image de l’esprit cosmopolite et précurseur de la scene artistique contemporaine de Berlin. La pratique de ces artistes est tout aussi éclectique. Coup de coeur pour Katja Novitskova dont le travail raccorde écologie et art via l’impact qu’une image trouvée sur la Toile a sur nous une fois que l’artiste la metamorphose:

Pour Pattern of Activation (Mutants) par exemple, Katia a repris des photographies du vers de mer ‘C.Elegans’ -cette creature mutante trouvée le long de la cote belge, symptôme. Depuis maintenant 8 ans, le prix du film dans l’art est soutenu en tandem par la galerie nationale et l’académie du film. Cette bourse s’adresse à de jeunes cineastes qui fusionnent film et arts plastiques selon une pratique mixte et expérimentale. L’exposition est soutenue par BMW et les Amis de la Nationalgalerie. Parmi les heureux élus de ces dernières années, citons Agnieszka Polska (2017), Anne Imhof (2015), Mariana Castillo Deball (2013), ou encore Cyprien Gaillard (2011).

Tobias Dostal. Perplexy

Opening 11th of September, 7 pm @ Haus am Lützowplatz

‘HaL’’s solo show of Tobias Dostal’s drawings and installations is a must-see, the artist’s first solo show in Berlin!

In the dark, you will come across his light sculptures moving like shiny montages, part cinema part kinetic art. The way they flash before us might remind you of the visual signals and gifs we see around us all the time, not least on our smartphones’ flashing screens. Dostal’s works bring us a step closer to the seductive power of the digital world, investigating how it catches our attention to barely let go.

2 years ago Tobias Dostal was awarded the prestigious Horst Janssen Graphic Art Prize for his series of animated ‘water drawings’ he had made during his residency in Burkina Faso in 2015. He has been living in Berlin for five years.

Tobias Dostal. Perplexy

Rendez-vous à HaL pour la premiere expo berlinoise de l’artiste Tobias Dostal. Dans le noir, ses sculptures lumineuses et autres installations faites de verre scintillent et bougent, clins d’oeil insolites à notre univers numérique qui s’agite et paraît danser sous nos yeux, partout, des écrans de nos smartphones aux panneaux de publicités.

On pense notamment aux gifs et autres signaux visuels qui nous titillent, voire nous obsèdent; ou peut-être aux montages ‘cinétiques’ à la Takis [artiste grec actuellement exposé à la Tate Modern]. L’oeuvre de Dostal fourmille d’inspirations.

Pas étonnant que ses dessins ‘aquatiques’ animés réalisés au Burkina Faso dans le cadre de sa résidence d’artiste en 2015 aient plu à la Fondation Cluppe qui lui décerna alors le prestigieux prix de graphisme ‘Horst Jansssen’ en 2017. Tobias Dostal vit à Berlin depuis 2014.

On display from the 11th of September to the 3rd of November 2019 @ Me Collectors Room

On the occasion of Berlin Art Week and in parallel with Collectors Room Berlin which designs spaces dedicated to three major German artists from three different generations, this exhibition highlights Thomas Olbricht‘s art collection, bringing together three modern and contemporary art giants:

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. his idyllic portraits painted in Dresden around the lakes of Moritzburg and his iconic Berlin street scenes pre-World War I reflect Olbricht’s love of German Expressionism, in particular the graphic works of the artists’ group ‘Die Brücke‘.

Gerhard Richter. Born in 1932, Richter is one of (if not the) most famous German artist in the world. The Olbricht collection is the only institution with all of its prints covering five decades of practice. This exhibition examines the self through introspection, which underlies Richter’s work since the 60s. His family photo album and celebrities press images are the source of his technical experiments when he draws on his painted portraits for example, or transforms his portraits into photographs. These juxtapositions create a kind of alchemy between the materials and media he uses.

Jonas Burgert takes centre stage as one of today’s best younger artists. You may already know his oils on canvas: stunningly oversize and opulent, dark, part-dream part-nightmare and yet incredibly realistic. Burgert paints what makes us human: a whirlwind of emotions and sensations that drive us throughout our lives. The sheer energy of his paintings is not as far as we might think from works by Kirchner and Richter: three distinct styles, but somehow still kindred spirits in the expressive power of their work.

À l’occasion de Berlin Art Week et en parallèle a Collectors Room Berlin qui conçoit des espaces dédiés trois artistes allemands majeurs de trois générations différentes, cette exposition met en lumière la collection de Thomas Olbricht, en trois temps:

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. ses portraits idylliques peints a Dresde autour des lacs de Moritzburg et ses scènes de rue Berlinoises devenues des icônes de la vie dans la capitale a l’aube de la 1ere Guerre Mondiale reflètent l’attrait d’Olbricht pour l’expressionnisme allemand, en particulier les oeuvres graphiques du groupe d’artistes ‘Die Brücke’.

Gerhard Richter. Né en 1932, Richter est aujourd’hui l’un des artistes allemands les plus connus au monde. La collection Olbricht est la seule institution avec l’intégralité de ses tirages recouvrant cinq décennies de pratique. Cette exposition gravite autour de l’humain, de l’introspectif qui sous-tend l’oeuvre de Richter depuis les années 60. L’album photo familial et les images de presse de célébrités sont la source de ses experimentations techniques lorsqu’il dessine sur ses portraits peints, ou qu’il transforme ses portraits en photographies. Ces métamorphoses créent une sorte d’alchimie entre les matériaux qu’il utilise.

Enfin, les jeunes talents d’aujourd’hui ne sont pas en reste, ici Jonas Burgert dont vous connaissez peut-être déjà les superbes huiles sur toile. Opulentes, énergiques, mi-rêves mi-dystopies, on les contemple comme si l’on entrait dans un théâtre. Burgert dépeint l’homme dans ce qu’il a de plus expressif. Chaque tableau met à nu toute une gamme de sensations, autant d’émotions qui constituent la moelle de notre existence: tout ce qui nous stimule, nous tourmente et nous fait rebondir. Cette thématique fait donc écho à Kirchner et Richter dont les oeuvres de la collection Olbricht suggèrent un étonnant chassé croisé entre 3 artistes d’horizons distincts mais finalement pas si éloignés que cela dans leur esthétique.

Christopher Kulendran Thomas. Ground Zero

September 11 to December 15, 2019 @ Schinkel Pavilion

Ground Zero. One thinks of a field of ashes, a destroyed place, exile, feeling uprooted, but also the sense of something entirely new. This is the first exhibition in Berlin for artist Christopher Kulendran Thomas.

His family is from Eelam, a Tamil area in northern and eastern Sri Lanka that no longer exists since its defeat by the Sri Lankan army. The economic liberalization that ensued intensified the contemporary art market on the island. The artists represented by these new galleries are young and tech-savvy, inspired not least by Western sources online.

The exhibition is also an opportunity to see the work New Eelam that was previously shown in Bristol at ‘Spike Island’ – the contemporary art space and hub for creatives to grow through fresh shows, artists studios and offices for start-ups and local designers, and community events.

The installation ‘New Eelam‘ is a kind of interactive ‘hypothesis’, a place of post-capitalist immersion between science fiction and utopia: in the words of the artist, this “laboratory of thought” tests “what could be a self-managed state if it was a distributed network rather than a nation linked to a territory. ”

What would it mean to be human in a world where technology takes precedence over our DNA and our intellect? What would a post-human individual look like?

These visions are bound to become reality, and in the meantime they keep us thinking and questioning. Thank you @Schinkel Pavilion for an intellectually stimulating show!

Ground Zero. On pense à un champ de cendres, un lieu détruit, l’exil vers un point de chute. C’est cette perte de repères, un manque d’attaches voire le sentiment de déracinement que cette exposition exprime. Il s’agit de la première à Berlin pour l’artiste Christopher Kulendran Thomas.

Sa famille vient d’Eelam, zone Tamil du nord et de l’est du Sri Lanka qui n’existe plus, vaincue par l’armée sri lankaise.

Cette défaite s’accompagna d’une libéralisation économique qui intensifia le marché de l’art contemporain sur l’île. Les artistes représentés par ces nouvelles galeries s’inspirent de leur expertise de la Toile et de tout ce qu’ils y trouvent comme sources occidentales.

L’exposition est aussi l’occasion de voir l’oeuvre New Eelam, précédemment exposée à Bristol à ‘Spike Island’ -espace d’art contemporain où la créativité et la communauté sont soudés, studios d’artistes et bureaux pour start-ups et designers locaux à la clef, sans oublier une programmation pointue axée sur l’art jeune.

L’installation ‘New Eelam’ est une sorte d’hypothèse interactive, un lieu d’immersion post-capitaliste entre la science fiction et l’utopie: selon les mots de l’artiste, ce “laboratoire de pensée” teste “ce que pourrait être un État autogéré s’il s’agissait d’un réseau distribué plutôt que d’une nation liée à un territoire.”

Que voudrait dire ‘être humain’ dans un monde où la technologie prendrait le pas sur notre ADN et notre intellect? À quoi ressemblerait un individu post-humain?

Autant de questions pas si futuristes qu’elles n’en ont l’air, et qui ont de quoi alimenter et pimenter nos discussions. Par ici l’art qui stimule nos neurones, direction Schinkel Pavilion!

Bjorn Melhus. Free Update

Exhibition @ Maschinenhaus M1 at Kindl – Centre for Contemporary Art, 15th of September 2019- 16th of February 2020

Concerning the evening of September 14th we urge you to take a trip to the KINDL Contemporary Art Center to (re) discover the work of Bjorn Melhus. His short films and video installations are infused with humour and pop, fun at first glance but actually cut-throat critical.

These cutting-edge films tackle burning questions like censorship or mass cultural consumption. In The Theory of Fear (2015) for example, the second part deals specifically with the thorny issue of surveillance policies that exacerbate a climate of fear.

‘Sugar’ is his latest production, premiered here at Maschinenhaus M1! The perfect opportunity to catch this new piece, his other works has been shown at major venues by the likes of Tate Modern, Centre Pompidou, or MOMA.

Go there once, and no doubt you will be back for more -a public guided tour is scheduled for the 16th of November 2019 and the 15th of February 2020.

Rien de prévu le soir du 14 septembre? Pourquoi pas une petite escapade au centre d’art contemporain KINDL pour y (re)découvrir le travail de Bjorn Melhus: ses courts-métrages et installations video à l’humour décapant et pop sont loufoques mais critiques: on y voit l’artiste lui-même ou bien des personnages décalés dont la mise en scène épingle le caractère parfois cirque des médias.

Ces films coup de poing et tranchants s’attaquent à des thématiques brûlantes comme la censure, la mondialisation, la consommation culturelle de masse. Prenez The Theory of Fear (2015) par exemple, dont la deuxième partie traite spécifiquement de la question épineuse des politiques de surveillance anxiogènes.

Sugar est sa toute dernière production, montrée en avant-première à Maschinenhaus M1. Curtain up for Robert Frank, one of the giants of postwar photography!

First off a couple of dates: 1924, his birth in Zurich; 1959 publication in the US of his photo series The Americans, which Jack Kerouac signed the preface for; and 1985, the year the America Haus showcased his photographs -Berlin’s first major institution to do so in fact.

His work is like a visual road movie, a reportage and social portrait in one, to be read like an open-air novel. The visual power of his photographs comes from the stories he captures through landscapes and encounters. His shots are endowed with feeling, up-close, revealing aspects of the United States that are more real, more rough around the edges. Out of the nearly 30,000 prints he made on his thousands of miles of travel between the two eastern and western coasts of the United States, 83 black-and-white prints have become icons that we instantly recognise today.

Oblique angle, close framing, motion blur, expressiveness … his style influenced a whole generation after him. In particular, C / O Berlin highlights his stay in Switzerland, his travels through Europe and South America as well as the unpublished images of the USA of the 50s and of course the classics from his legendary series The Americans.

This exhibition ‘Robert Frank / Unseen’ will show you this iconic photographer of modernism in a new light. You will not be disappointed!

Parmi près de 30,000 tirages prises au fil de son parcours des milliers de kilometres séparant les deux côtes est et ouest des Etats-Unis, quelques 83 tirages en noir et blanc sont devenues ces icônes que nous (re)connaissons aujourd’hui.

Angles obliques, cadrage serré, mouvement flou, expressivité… son style marqua toute une génération après lui. La galerie berlinoise spécialisée dans la photographie “C/O” met en lumière son séjour en Suisse, ses voyages à travers l’Europe et en Amérique du Sud, sans oublier ces images inédites des Etats-Unis des années 50 à côté des classiques de sa série légendaire ‘The Americans’.

Cette exposition ‘Robert Frank/Unseen’ vous montre donc cette icône de la photographie moderne sous un autre jour. Vous ne serez pas déçu!

Note to all movie lovers! You will be stunned by the exhibition ‘Magic Media-Media Magic’, which retraces the history of video art from the 1970s to the present day through the Herzogenrath Archive Collection: letters, sketches, rare photos reflect the visual power of this era.

John Cage, Sigmar Polke over Bill Viola, Nam June Paik or Rebecca Horn, but also Klaus Bruch, Vico Acconci, Joan Jonas, Marcel Oldenbach, Bjoern Melhus and Ulrike Rosenbach are represented.

Wulf Herzogenrath promoted video art as an independent discipline in Germany. On this occasion, he will provide us with further insights and discuss with young students about both his curatorial work since the 1970s and as a museum director.

Welcome to Statista… slightly offbeat style, but urgently on point!

The website sets the tone: geometric, black and white, retro atmosphere, both futuristic and art nouveau-ish. 4 slogan-words scroll in a loop, maybe hinting at the screens of the Stock Exchange.

Statista is like Berlin: out of the ordinary, anti-conformist, experimental.

Both an art forum and a social platform, this forward thinking hub is focussed on issues of urban life and ecology. An international conference is scheduled for the autumn. The artistic projects being presented are like prototypes, innovative proposals such as a crypto currency based on the welfare of bees; facades of buildings with a resolutely ‘green’ design … As for community engagement, one of the highlights is “Stimmen First Recording”, a choir launched by “Raumlabor” (Andrea Hofmann, Frauke Gerstenberg, Markus Bader) Led by Bernadette La Hengst, this ‘Statistics Choir’ is free and open to all. The collaborative energy of the voice is used to address social and housing issues in a city like Berlin, the score being a kind of manifesto.

Check your diaries! Next rehearsals scheduled for Wednesdays from 4 to 6 pm. The concerts will take place during Statista’s presentation week, September 11th and 13th at 7 pm. Fingers crossed for this choir’s ongoing success!

Statista intends to inspire other cooperatives where art can join forces with the city to optimise urban life: eco-friendly, art-fuelled, community-oriented. ‘Allesandersplatz‘ is a ‘totally different’ model, an anti-Alexander Platz that is people-minded and sustainable.

The so-called Allianz bedrohter Berlin Atelierhauser, a.k.a AbBa, aims to keep artists’ studios in Berlin alive in the face of rising prices. In September 2015, AbBa put a poster on the facade of the Haus der Statistik to launch a new activities centre. Berlin’s key cultural institutions and organizations were quick to react and keen to collaborate. Statista was born from such a cooperation between ZK / U (Center of Art and Urbanism) and KW (Kunstwerke Institute of Contemporary Art)

Since then, ZK / U Artistic Directors Matthias Einhoff, Philip Horst and Harry Sachs; together with KW’s curator Tirdad Zolghadr, are consolidating HdS’ projects.. Built in the years 1968-70, HdS used to be the headquarters of the statistics office of the GDR. With approximately 100,000 square meters in the city center, this transformed and extended site is set to be the place for minds to meet and projects to grow- including initiatives for affordable housing and educational programmes, as well as a new town hall and administrative buildings.

A la fois forum artistique et plateforme sociale, cet espace insolite gravite autour de l’urbain et de l’écologie. Une conférence internationale est prévue à l’automne. Les projets artistiques présentés sont comme des prototypes, des propositions créatives et innovantes: monnaie ‘crypto’ fondée sur le bien-être des abeilles; façades d’immeubles au design résolument ‘green’..

En matière d’interaction avec la communauté, mention spéciale pour “Stimmen First Recording”, une chorale lancée par “Raumlabor” (Andrea Hofmann, Frauke Gerstenberg, Markus Bader). Dirigée par Bernadette La Hengst, cette ‘Statistics Choir’ convie tous les amateurs de chant, où qu’ils soient à Berlin. L’énergie partagée de la voix fait ici écho aux problématiques urbaines, ici la partition en guise de manifeste.

A vos agendas! Prochaines répétitions les mercredis de 16 à 18h. Les concerts auront lieu durant la semaine de présentation Statista, les 11 et 13 septembre à 19h. Croisons les doigts pour que cette chorale perdure! Quoiqu’éphémère, Statista compte bien inspirer d’autres coopératives où l’art puisse s’allier à la ville dans un souci constant de l’environnement et davantage d’échanges avec la communauté. Antidote au Alexanderplatz, ‘allesandersplatz’ est un modèle ‘totalement autre’ donc, à l’image de Berlin l’atypique.

Petit historique du lieu: la dénommée Allianz bedrohter Berlin Atelierhauser, alias ‘AbBa’ s’engage à préserver les studios et ateliers d’artistes à Berlin face à la montée des prix. En septembre 2015, AbBa colle une affiche sur la façade de la Haus der Statistik en vue de créer un centre d’activités socio-culturelles -geste qui lance un signal fort à la politique urbaine via les institutions et organismes culturels de Berlin. Statista est née de cette coopération entre ZK/U (Centre d’Art et d’Urbanisme) et KW (Institut ‘Kunstwerke’ d’Art Contemporain). Les directeurs artistiques de ZK/U Matthias Einhoff, Philip Horst et Harry Sachs; avec le commissaire d’exposition du KW Tirdad Zolghadr, visent depuis à consolider les projets du HdS. Construit dans les années 1968-70, HdS était le siège social du bureau de statistiques de la RDA. Avec ses quelque 100 000 mètres carrés en plein centre-ville, cet édifice transformé et étendu sera autant un point de rencontres qu’un tremplin culturel: initiatives pour des logements abordables, projets sociaux et éducatifs, ainsi qu’une nouvelle mairie et des bâtiments administratifs y verront le jour.

This third edition of the art berlin fair will take place from the 12th to the 15th of September @ Tempelhof.

Berlin might be a night owl, but art certainly won’t stop for her during the day, given the number of galleries and artists who now call Berlin their home. The art berlin fair is further proof of the capital’s wit and creativity, showcasing artists who keep their finger on the pulse of our society. You are invited to keep the conversation going.

A range of art discoveries await you, with not only 110 national and international galleries in the ‘Galleries’, ‘Special Projects’ and ‘Salon’ sections (Barbara Thumm, Spruth Magers, Contemporary Taubert, Spike, Triangle among many more) but also art modern alongside young emerging artists. Eclectic and insightful to suit every taste!

POSITIONS Berlin Art Fair

Note the opening party on Thursday, September 12 at 9 pm and all exhibitions open until 9 pm on Friday the 13th.

In partnership with Berlin Art Week, POSITIONS Berlin Art Fair will take you to the heart of Berlin’s arty scene with its landmarks such as the KW Institute of Contemporary Art, Berlinische Galerie, Gropius Bau, Hamburger Bahnhof alongside private museums.

An enticing program with among other things: a discussion of artists Frederik Foert and Konstantin Bayer about ‘Summer of China, from KTV to Malatang’ on Friday 13th of September at 3pm; a round table with the directors of Positions Kristian Jarmuschek and Heinrich Carstens who will discuss everything but the art market on Saturday, September 14th at 6 pm. And if you’re into architecture, you can listen in to the conversation between Eigenheim Weimar / Berlin and Bauhaus University on Sunday 15th of September at 3pm about their cooperation on the centenary of the Bauhaus.

Positions Berlin Art Fair is also known for its fairs dedicated to drawing and paper, notably ‘Paper Positions‘ held in Berlin, Basel, Munich and Frankfurt with galleries from different European countries: Lithuania (Meno Nisa, Vilnius, and Meno Parkas of Kaunas and Dusseldorf), Latvia (Maksla XO, Riga), Switzerland (Mader, Basel and Antonella Cattani Contemporary Art of Bolzano) and Spain (Projekteria de Barcelona). In addition to Berlin, a fine selection of German galleries from Munich, Düsseldorf, Hamburg and Freiburg awaits you there.

En partenariat avec Berlin Art Week, Positions Berlin Art Fair vous mènera au coeur de la scène arty de Berlin avec ses lieux-phares comme le KW Institute of Contemporary Art, la Berlinische Galerie, le Gropius Bau, la Hamburger Bahnhof sans oublier les musées privés.

Programme alléchant avec entre autres: discussion des artistes Frederik Foert et Konstantin Bayer autour de ‘Summer of China, from KTV to Malatang’ le vendredi 13 septembre à 15h; table ronde avec les directeurs de Positions Kristian Jarmuschek et Heinrich Carstens qui discuteront de tout sauf le marché de l’art le samedi 14 septembre à 18h. Et si vous êtes branché architecture, notez bien la conversation entre Eigenheim Weimar/Berlin et l’université Bauhaus le dimanche 15 septembre 15h, au sujet de leur coopération à l’occasion du centenaire du Bauhaus.

Positions Berlin Art Fair est aussi réputée pour ses foires dédiées au dessin et au papier avec ‘Paper Positions’ à Berlin, Bâle, Munich et Francfort, galeries de différents pays d’Europe à la clef: Lituanie (Meno Nisa, Vilnius; et Meno Parkas de Kaunas et Dusseldorf), Lettonie (Maksla XO, Riga), Suisse (Mader, Bâle et Antonella Cattani Contemporary Art de Bolzano), Espagne (Projekteria de Barcelone)
